Braces
Braces are devices used by dental professionals to straighten crooked teeth or to correct a misaligned bite. They are used to help reposition teeth with an aim to adjust the bite. They work by placing constant pressure on each tooth to move them to the desired position. Braces will be tightened at each returning visit applying slightly more pressure to the teeth to continue to move them over into their proper position.
There are 4 types of braces: metal, ceramic, lingual and Invisalign or invisible braces.
- Metal Braces: These braces consist of metal brackets and wires. They are much smaller and less noticeable than they used to be, and they now feature heat-activated arch wires that use your body heat to assist in moving teeth faster and less painfully.
- Ceramic Braces: Although they are the same size and shape as metal braces, they feature tooth coloured or clear brackets to blend in with teeth for a less noticeable appearance. There is also an option of tooth-coloured wires for further subtlety and are a great solution for those who want fast results without standing out too much. These braces however can stain easily if not looked after correctly.
- Invisalign: These are clear, plastic removable aligners that are replaced every 2 weeks, allowing you to eat and drink whatever you want. Despite being virtually invisible, it is the most expensive option and is only available for teenagers and adults. These may have slower results than traditional braces.
